About the Event
Come and participate in a unique two-day weekend retreat and workshop focusing on Wilderness First Aid & Survival!
We're thrilled to present this course and help ensure you're well-prepared for your summertime wilderness activities and adventures. Accidents can happen, and encountering someone in distress is always a possibility. Acquiring fundamental first aid and survival skills is essential to be prepared for such scenarios!
We welcome instructor Brent Newton with Medical Boot Camp LLC for this course. Brent is currently a Critical Care Flight Paramedic and Instructor with Air Evac Lifeteam in Ardmore, Oklahoma. Brent has taught for agencies such as the U.S. military, numerous fire and law enforcement agencies in four states, as well as SAR agencies in Belize.
This two-day course includes classroom lectures and outdoor, hands-on skills practice to include the following:
- Patient Assessment with PPE Considerations
- Wounds and Wound Care
- Recognition and Treatment of Shock
- Environmental Emergencies
- Patient Evacuation and Movement
- Splinting and Joint Reduction
- Airway Management and Chest Injuries
- Bites, Stings, and Other Ouchies
- Finding and Building Shelter
- Building Fire
- Preventing Hypothermia
Saturday ~ Classroom Portion (Gunnison Public Library - 1 Quartz Street)
9:00 AM - Wilderness Survival Pro Tips
1:00 PM - Lunch (bring a sack lunch)
Outdoor Portion
2:00-6:00 PM - Outdoor Hands-on Skills Practice
7:00 PM - Dinner (Provided)
Sunday
8:00 AM - Breakfast (Provided)
9:00-3:00 - In-Field Scenarios and Skills Practice.
11:30-12:30 - Lunch (Provided)
We will be camping out on location in beautiful Gunnison County! If you will be camping with us, please bring any gear you will need to comfortably spend the night in camp.
We suggest bringing the following camping gear:
- Tent (unless you plan on sleeping in your vehicle)
- Cot or Sleeping Pad
- Sleeping Bag
- Pillow
- Rain Jacket
- Casual clothing/shoes for classroom lecture on Saturday AM
- Warm clothing; preferably layers
- Boots/shoes you can hike in and camp shoes
- Hat
- Sunglasses
- Sunscreen
- Headlamp and/or flashlight
- Water and any other beverages or snacks you prefer
- Toiletries and medications
We are providing: An outhouse, extra water, snacks, and an outdoor kitchen. GVWN will also be providing dinner on Saturday and breakfast and lunch on Sunday.
